Funding your study abroad experience

There are some funding opportunities that are currently available to students wishing to pursue a study abroad, international field course, or exchange opportunity.

Study/work international fund (SWIF)

SWIF funding is eligible to all students regardless of citizenship status. SWIF funding amounts largely depend on how long you will be gone but can award up to $2000.

SWIF deadlines

SWIF funding applications must be submitted at least one month prior to your departure date.

While SWIF funding is not guaranteed, your chances of receiving funding are highest if you apply by the following dates:

Fall semester opportunity:聽Apply by September 30th聽

Winter semester opportunity:聽Apply by January 31st

Summer semester opportunity:聽Apply by May 31st

How to apply for SWIF

There are several steps that you will need to complete in order to be eligible for SWIF funding:

1 Complete a pre-departure course

Before you submit your SWIF funding application, you鈥檒l need to complete a聽pre-departure course聽on Brightspace. Visit the International Learning Experience (ILE) funding page for more details.

2 Sign up for International SOS

Dalhousie has partnered with聽International SOS, a global travel medical and security service. If you're heading abroad, you'll need to sign up.

International SOS gives you:

  • Medical and security advice before and during your trip
  • Support in case of emergencies while you're travelling
  • A platform to register your travel with Dalhousie

3 Enroll in Backpack Insurance

If you're heading abroad for an聽International Learning Experience, you鈥檒l need to purchase聽Backpack insurance鈥攊t鈥檚 a required part of the process.

Dalhousie has teamed up with聽Backpack聽to offer students top-quality travel insurance and wellness support. The plan includes:

  • Travel coverage
  • Accidental death coverage
  • Access to travel clinics and vaccines
  • Coverage for medical care if you contract聽COVID-19聽while abroad
    (Note: COVID testing for travel purposes isn鈥檛 covered)

Bonus:

Your Backpack plan covers聽multiple Dalhousie-related trips聽within a one-year period. Just keep in mind鈥攊t doesn鈥檛 apply to personal travel.
