Resolving conflict

Conflict is a fact of life, a natural result of people having different points of view, values, and beliefs. Conflict is inevitable when people work together and is a normal part of negotiation and solving problems. It does not have to be a negative experience, particularly if the conflict is managed well and everyone is willing to resolve any unresolved issues or situations.

If situations arise that result in strained relationships, such as with another student, a staff member, or a professor, the best first step is usually to have an open and respectful conversation. You are encouraged to try to manage any conflicts that arise in a productive way. It is recognized, however, that some conflicts can be difficult to resolve on your own.

Resources for students

If the conflict cannot be resolved by an open discussion with the person with whom you are having difficulties, your next step is to speak with the associate dean of students. The associate dean can provide advice, intervene, and help to mediate. They can also direct you to further sources of information and advice, should you need them.
